The Joint commission,
through the National Patient Safety Goals recommends team training and
collaboration to help develop team communication skills and improve patient
safety (Dillon, Noble, & Kaplan,
2009). Nurses are part of an
interdisciplinary team responsible for safe patient care. It is critical that all members of the team work
together collaboratively to provide safe and seamless quality care. Use of high-fidelity simulation is an
effective teaching tool to develop interpersonal and critical thinking skills
that urge students to apply knowledge to a clinical practice scenarios, apply
learned skills and make clinical decision in a safe environment without harm to
patients (Dillon et al., 2009; Griffin-Sobel et al., 2010). Use of simulation technology in a mock code
with nursing and medical students for example according to Dillon et al., (2009)
provides opportunities for team work, collaboration, and communication. Intrapersonal team education through
simulation creates feelings of support from peers, ease and confidence of
delegation, and assists individuals to adapt to the environment and brings
feelings of professional solidarity (Leonard,
Shuhaibar, & Chen, 2010).
